The game of kings
Rating: Reviewed by: STAFF RECOMMENDATION, COOLBELLUP, WA, 28 Oct 2008Yes that's right 10/10! My favourite historical novel after many years of reading. Its got it all. Vivid, impecabley researched historical settings combined with characters that leap off the page and tense, Byzantine plotting. A real winner.

Hot rod [dvd]
Rating: Reviewed by: KEVIN, O'CONNOR, 07 Nov 2008Quite possibly the greatest motion picture ever made. The Citizen Kane of stuntman movies.

The curious incident of the dog in the night-time [sound recording]

Notes of a dirty old man
Rating: Reviewed by: KEVIN, O'CONNOR, 07 Nov 2008In a sanitised world full of political correctness and sacchrine-coated art without soul or worth, Charles Bukowski shines like a beacon as a poet, author and the drunken, womanising, hellraising saviour of free speech with humour and an agonising reality that sets him apart from all writer's before and since. Bukowski is a joy to read.

The road
Rating: Reviewed by: KEVIN, O'CONNOR, 07 Nov 2008Perfection. Every paragraph is a poem : every word perfectly placed by a master storyteller. No one writes like Cormac McCarthy.

Broken arrow [sound recording]
Rating: Reviewed by: KEVIN, O'CONNOR, 07 Nov 2008Sub-standard fare from a musical genius. As inconsistent as he is brilliant this one fails to deliver.

Led Zeppelin [DVD]
Rating: Reviewed by: KEVIN, O'CONNOR, 07 Nov 2008The first twenty minutes of DVD 1 establishes Led Zeppelin as the greatest white blues band ever. John Bonham steals the show and the band is without peer. The bloated excess of "The Song Remains The Same" pales into insignificance next to the brutal power of early Zeppelin.

Heathen songs [sound recording]
Rating: Reviewed by: KEVIN, O'CONNOR, 08 Nov 2008First-up effort from Fremantle based alt.country masters the Kill Devil Hills. Features "Drinkin' too much" and "Gunslinger" full of drunken swagger, good humour and the odd journey into the heart of darkness. This CD is full of rough edges that enhance it's charm even more.

The Persian boy
Rating: Reviewed by: STAFF RECOMMENDATION, COOLBELLUP, WA, 13 Nov 2008This is a book of many parts. It’s fiction, it’s history, it’s a war story and a romance. It is also an epic adventure and an amazing recreation of the ancient world that deals with some of the great themes of humanity. The writing is unemotional yet wonderfully descriptive and it packs a solid emotional punch.

No country for old men [dvd]
Rating: Reviewed by: PIETER, SAFETY BAY, WA, 01 Dec 2008An amazing movie that re-creates the book of the same name by Cormac Mccarthy. Javier Bardem perfectly plays the roll of Anton Chigurh and may just be the scariest of movie bad guys. Almost perfect.

Toward the blues [sound recording]
Rating: Reviewed by: KEVIN, O'CONNOR, 09 Dec 2008Legendary Australian blues band featuring Matt Taylor and Phil Manning. A classic album by a band that still plays the pub curcuit today. Black and blue and 32/20 are stand-out tracks.

Nebraska [sound recording]
Rating: Reviewed by: KEVIN, O'CONNOR, 09 Dec 2008These stripped-back gems are regarded by many as some of Springsteen's finest and darkest work. Recorded onto 4 track cassette they were originally intended to be demos but unsatisfactory versions recorded with the E Street Band led to their release, as is.
